Today's workplace

Why improv, and why now.

Companies, organizations and universities are turning to improv exercises for interpersonal skill building, leadership and teamwork. Media case studies by companies such as Forbes, CNN and Slate have reported that improv training is incredibly beneficial in the workplace, and is proven to:

Problem solvingPromotes creative and adaptive problem solving skills.
TrustBuilds trust and support across a team.
CommunicationBuilds interpersonal communication skills.
ConflictHelps defuse conflict before it hardens.
StressGives people a real outlet for stress management.
ConfidenceBuilds the confidence to share ideas and opinions.
The basics

What is improv?

  • Improvisation is an unplanned, instinctive, extemporaneous interaction with others. By introducing specific improv games and challenges in a group setting, people open up to enhancing their natural conversational skills in any situation.
  • The basic rules of improv train your brain to think fast, engage in active listening, improve memory and recall, push you out of your comfort zone, and build the confidence to share your ideas and opinions.
  • These are key ingredients for employees to have better customer relations and to enhance company morale.
Real connection, built through play.
Value proposition

What your team walks away with.

Objective

A fun, interactive, hands-on experience.

To provide a fun, interactive, hands-on instructional learning experience for employees, while simultaneously showing appreciation and gratitude for all that they do.

Each workshop is intended to celebrate, reinforce and motivate individual and collective efforts, all of which play an integral part in the success of the company. The focus is on “yes, and” games and role play scenarios for team members. This builds trust within the core group, while emphasizing effective communication on the fly.

A Cool Beans Comedy professional conducts an interactive workshop focused on enhancing team building, improvisational skill-sets, and active listening, all in a group social experience that keeps paying off long after the session is over.

The workshop

Good to know

Questions, answered.

Do our people need any experience?

None at all, and most have none. Nobody performs alone in the workshop, nobody is dragged up in front of the room, and every exercise is built so a brand new hire and a twenty-year veteran get the same amount out of it. The people who tell me beforehand that they are not funny are reliably the ones who end up running the room.

How big can the group be?

Small teams up to large ones. The design changes with the size so that people are participating rather than watching from the back. Tell me your headcount and I will tell you the shape that works.

Is it actually workplace appropriate?

Yes, and that is a deliberate design constraint, not a promise we make and hope. The material is HR-conscious and stays consistent with your brand. If there are topics you want off the table, tell me up front and they are off the table.

Where does it happen?

Either at your office or at the Ice House in Pasadena, the oldest comedy club in the country, where we teach and produce. On-site is simpler and cheaper. The club is the one people still talk about. Showcases are almost always at the club, because the stage is the point.

Do you do anything bigger than a workshop?

We do. We also produce private stand-up showcases, where your own team writes their own material with us and performs it on the Ice House stage in a single day. It is the most memorable thing we do, and it is a bigger lift. Happy to walk you through it once we have got your team in a room.

How do we start?

Tell me your group size, a rough window, and what you are hoping people walk away with. I will send real numbers the same day. A deposit holds the date and the instructors once you pick one.
